The replica of the John Smith shallop visted the Baltimore Inner Harbor on the weekend of July 28th and 29th, 2007. The boat was
so small in comparison to all the other ship exhibits around
the Inner Harbor you would probably miss it unless you
knew of the exhibit. The shallop has a crew of 12 and
8 oars - very long oars. When you really see how small
this boat is you realize those voyagers were living off
the land for that 121 day voyage of exploration of the
Chesapeake Bay. The 2007 retracing of John Smith's
voyage inaugurates the first all-water National Historic
Trail in America. |

Captain Ian Bystrom relaxes on this quiet morning and answers questions about the voyage experience. Looking at the enlarged view of this photo you can see the small containers for stowing supplies and gear for ship and crew. Traveling light for sure.
